It was confirmed on Thursday 1 March that Rassie Erasmus, former Springbok flanker and current Director of Rugby of the Springboks, will take over as the coach of the Springboks from Allister Coetzee.
For the fifth time in its long and prestigious history, the St Andrew’s College first team took home first place in the 2018 edition of the Vides Water Polo Tournament. This achievement is notable considering that the side had no fewer that seven Grade 10 pupils in the starting lineup.
With a father a former Free State Easterns player and raised with a passion for cricket from an early age, Francois van Rooyen has developed into the top all-rounder in the Grahamstown Cricket Board (GCB) first league. He is the second best batsman in the first league (with 432 runs) and fifth best bowler (with 18 wickets), beating out many specialist players in both categories.
After Allister Coetzee’s axing two weeks ago, Rassie Erasmus has taken on the imposition of interim Springbok coach up until the World Cup in 2019. After the World Cup, a new head coach is expected to be appointed, with Erasmus reverting back to the Director of Rugby role.

With the announcement on Friday that Allister Coetzee and the South African Rugby Union (SARU) have parted ways, many will look at the two years that Coetzee was at the helm of the Springboks as a failure. While SARU has many deep rooted issues that need to be addressed before South African rugby can regain its former glory, it cannot be ignored that Coetzee coached the Springboks to a number of record defeats and should be held accountable as head coach.
